Dear Recipient Name:

I can’t tell you how narrowly you missed acceptance for a position here in the financial analysis section of Advanced Technology. I seldom make it a practice of explaining the reasons to any applicant we turn down, but in your case I’d like you to know so you can benefit by our opinions in your search for the right employer.

The fact is that you are overqualified for even the top assignment in the department. We could not, in good conscience, hire you to fill a position that leads nowhere and where future salary increases would be small and far between. I suggest that you apply to several of the other technology factories in our area that are two or three times our size and would be more likely to have the right spot for you.

Sincerely,

Your Name
